Very happy to see that Refuge l’Espace is still a wonderful place to go to when in the area of Glacier 3000. We were here 4 years ago and wrote many features about this small mountain hut dangling on the ledge of a 2800 meters high glacier. Monocle Magazine loved our story and even B There, the inflight magazine of Brussels Airlines brought it in a feature of mine with nothing but secret places in Europe.
First of all, climbing (with 2 telepheriques) on a glacier of 3000 meters altitude is spectacular. It’s a lunar landscape of white and blue sky (if you are lucky like us). Then arriving at the Refuge l’Espace after a serious hike or ski tour is really rewarding. A small hut with an interior of wood and funny details and a couple that knows how to cook great but simple local food. Hearty soups and stews, risottos and a dish with Tomme cheese and truffle. Delis!
A secret tip is that Glacier 3000 is not only close to fancy (and expensive) Gstaad but even closer to the village of Les Diablerets, a small intimate place with a cute river running through town and more affordable accommodation with lots of charm, like hotel Le Pillon, a historical hotel.
