“Take a picture of us!” shouts Nunzio when he sees us walking down the street with our cameras. Two weeks ago in Brussels we almost got attacked three times because of doing our job and taking pictures while here, people are happy, friendly, inviting and enjoying life much more.

So Nunzio is member of the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso in Bernalda, a club for locals who come here together to, well, be together. They sit outside in a row, like a longer version of the two old men from the Muppet Show, but less grumpy. Inside they play pool, read the jounali, play cards, discuss life, drink a cafe (no beer or wine here),…

To the right, in the blue suit, you see Giovanni, he is a professore and wrote several books, one about poetry in the South. Giovanni gave me a copy and signed it. He said, you are from Belgium, I am from Italy, but we are all Europeans and we are all together. He is right, finally some wise words after too much anti-EU talk. I should read Giovanni’s book now and learn Italian.

So for Nunzio and his friends, I am writing this post. Nunzio said he would repost it then on FaceBook. It doesn’t matter if you are 75 years old. When you are a proud member of the Società Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso in Bernalda, you keep up with your time.
