Love it, love it, love it. Maybe Spitsbergen is my Greek island in the north. I like the smallness, the quirkiness, the feeling of being remote and away. Longyearbayen is special. I am sure lots of travellers won’t find it that thrilling but we love it. It’s just one street with shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and the normal businesses of a normal town. In winter it’s intensely covered in snow, in summer, like today, you get amazing views over the bay and the mountains. Blue sky included.

And let me tell you that Spitsbergen is an affordable destination. It’s not like Arctic Canada where they think it’s normal you have to pay 450 euro for a bad hotel room. And for those wanting to see wildlife, this is the place to be. Several people in our circle of polar expert friends have told us that Spitsbergen is THE place to come to in summer to see polar bears and marine life. So if you want a polar experience and do not have the budget to go to Antarctica, come to Arctic Europe. Instead of penguins you might have close encounters (not too close, that is) with polar bears and other fauna. At 1/3 of the price.

Spitsbergen, did we tell you already that we like you?!!
