“It is not white, it is beige.” Says the expedition lady Mette. We finally spot our first pair of bears. They are on the winter ice above Svalbard. This large stretch of ice is retreating fast towards the north. With the ship we cruise slowly through the big chunks of frozen sea where we spot now and then a polar bear. They smell and see us but they don’t come closer. The bears hop from one piece of ice to the other, now and then stopping to roll in the snow or rest. Energy conserving modus is on, unless it is to hunt a seal, because polar bears never say no to a nice, big piece of chubby seal.
