Just in front of the Smeerenburg glacier we spot a swimming polar bear. It kind of looks like a beige dog in the water, sticking his head and butt above the surface while moving quite fast and furious. He’s on the hunt for a chubby seal lying on a piece of ice in the fjord. Slowly he approaches the ice, with only his black nose visible and waits to attack. The seal probably smells the bear and slips into the water. Gone is the bear’s lunch.
But even without seeing the bear versus seal attack, we are enjoying very much cruising along this fjord under a clear blue sky. Svalbard showed us different types of weather and we can only be very happy with this crisp and clearblue skies with plenty of sunshine glistering on the water of this quiet fjord.
