After exactly 3 years we are back in North Korea. Why? Because we loved our first trip, because we were amazed that one of the last closed countries is quite open to receiving tourists. Last time and also on this occasion, we are traveling with Koryo Tours, the longest established operator in this secret country.
This British but Beijing based company is taking us on a 5-day short tour around Pyongyang the capital of the DPRK. Our main reason is to be here when it’s the 15th of August, Liberation Day (also South Korea celebrates this holiday that marks the victory in the war against Japan). Next to that, we can also enjoy the Arirang or Mass Games again. Not once but even twice if we want to.
Our group of 15 are from all over the world and of all ages. By accident, one of the most popular travel bloggers, Derek from Wandering Earl, is in our group. If bloggers start coming to North Korea this means something. The DPRK is definitely opening up even more for tourists. No need anymore to hand in your cell phones when entering the country, our guides from Koryo Tours have internet and are live Intagram’ing with pictures of the tours. There are more hotels and restaurants popping up and there is even the talk of a ski resort opening soon.
We will try to update this blog as much as possible during our trip. It’s still challenging but possible. More surprises about North Korea to follow soon in the coming days.
