This is the wild, wild west. No kidding. I think even tough cowboys from Montana would feel rather small in this western corner of Mongolia. In Bayan-Ölgii, there are cows on the streets, hungry goats practically entering the only decent restaurant in town (Pamukkale, for some Turkish delights) and nomads/cowboys on their Russian bikes chasing horses down the road. Lots of people told us Bayan-Ölgii is ugly, there is nothing to see or do, it’s a hell hole. But we like it. It’s lost glory, think of bygone communist style buildings and a very real place where tourism is really limited to the summer months. Most venture down here to see the Kazakh Eagle Hunters during the festival. Others come here to hike, camp and enjoy the Altai Mountains. In any case, how desolate or strange Bayan-Ölgii might look, we like it. Just try to see the beauty of it all and enjoy the domestic animal sightings in the street.
