To build a real Tree Hotel you probably need two things: strong, tall and big trees and a good imagination. These two conditions are found here in Harads in Swedish Lapland. When in 2010, the Tree Hotel opened its doors, all the design and architectural critics loved it. And they still do. Building imaginative and almost fairy-like, architectural structures high up in elegant and tall trees in the middle of far-away Lapland? Who wouldn’t love the idea.
The people behind the concept is the Swede Kent Lindvall and his wife Britta Jonsson who both know the hospitality business quite well. They were running the small and intimate Brittas Pensionat for almost ten years before they started the Tree Hotel project.
The glass cube is designed by Tham & VidegĂĄrd Arkitekter who came up with the idea of a 4×4 box made out of mirrored glass, lightweight aluminium, plywood. The mirrored glass is coated with a special film of transparent ultraviolet colour only seen by birds so they wouldn’t fly into the almost invisible structure. While birds avoid the glass cube, humans tend to fall in love with it, and who knows, maybe feel like a birdy in a tree.
