Hotel Anntolanhovi near Mikkeli, next to Lake Saimaa, used to be a traditional, Finnish health retreat until the owners decided to transform it gradually into a more contemporary resort. The first step was building a collection of Art & Design Villas designed by the local architect company Emma Johansson. The 13 eco-timber houses are made out of local materials like Finnish birch, stone and natural fabrics. All ceramics in the open kitchen are from Iittala while Mademoiselle chairs by Finnish designer Tapiovaara give colourful accents to the natural décor. Every villa has a sauna, spa room and for in summer a rowing boat, bikes and in winter sledges and snowshoes. Guests wanting to relax and stay in can order an in-house breakfast, lunch and dinner, all made with local and seasonal products.
