The region around the capital Teruel in Aragon is known for its world-famous, Spanish ham. Not the legendary jamon bellota (from acorn-fed pigs) but still a DOP which ensures that the ham around here are among the best in Spain. Great food can be simple and cheap: when you ask in the village of Monroyo in the bar on the square for a bocadillo jamon, you get a fantastic ham sandwich made with the local jamon de Monroyo (a litre of house wine costs 2 euros here). At the classic yet sexy Torre del Visco Hotel, we get heavenly ham for breakfast served by the friendly breakfast lady who constantly cuts slices of jamon fresh from the bone. Perfect with the pan con tomate and the fresh local cheese or sobrasada (typical fresh sausage from Mallorca). We sit for breakfast at the communal table in the cosy open kitchen of the hotel, sip on freshly made lemon juice and watch the breakfast lady cut of more jamon to feed our crave for this delicate meat. Torre del Visco is a secluded hotel, you will have to do some effort to get here. A winding road takes you along a 5,5 kilometre long gravel road to a location that is far away from everything and everybody. The old tower from the 15th century is still here, there’s even a bedroom inside. In the other buildings more accommodation and cozy corners with fireplaces and a fine dining restaurant are hidden. The décor is traditional, the atmosphere relaxed, not too stiff but still classy. The fine and inventive dinner is taken on the terrace with views over the 89 hectares of private fields and in the distance the river Tastavins. Many residents of Barcelona (which is located 220 kilometres away) come here for a weekend to relax in the huge garden with roses and olive trees far away from the world as we know it. We might even consider this hotel for our new project “Finding Remote”…who knows.
