Eight years ago we discovered this corner of Spain during a press trip to Jerez and a bar crawl along the famous sherry bodegas. One of the winemakers took us to San Lucar de Barrameda and introduced us to this exceptional seaside city. San Lucar is less than ten kilometres from Chipiona, next to the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and just in front of the amazing Doñana National Park. Casa Bigote is an institution in San Lucar and for epicureans loving simple food even in Spain. The restaurant is located at the Bajo de Guia overlooking the water where one restaurant sits next to another. On the first floor of an anonymous building there is the restaurant itself and on the corner of a small street the Taberna Casa Bigote where you can eat tapas while standing at the bar or around wine barrels. On a typical Tuesday afternoon in August the bar is packed with Spaniards ordering one fantastic tapa after another along with ice buckets filled with bottles of manzanilla (a sherry wine produced only around the coast here with a saltier taste thanks to the sea breeze touching and influencing the wine). This establishment has been around since 1951 when the father of the current owners, the brothers Fernando and Paco Bigote, started the place as a simple Manzanilla bar for fishermen. Fernando is the chef and creates delicate tapas and dishes with an emphasis on the sea and ocean. While we otherwise say no to eating tuna, we just have to taste the Atún Mechado and Marrajo a la vinagreta. Next to us we spot a group of fourtysomething locals from Seville having a good time drinking, tasting, chatting while the kids play a bit further in the sand. A chef from Jerez invites us to come to Jerez and eat at his place too. Chef Fernando himself shows us his restaurant, talks about his love for the ocean, San Lucar and the good, simple cuisine of southern Spain. Everyone here is friendly, laid back and relaxed, even if this is the silly summer season when everything should happen now or never. I think the salty air moves more than just the sleeping sherry in the barrels: the atmosphere in this region around San Lucar is so friendly and inviting, we immediately decide to come back soon. “Maybe in three days?” say Miriam and Jan from B&B Chipibeach. “Then there are the famous horse races along the beaches of San Lucar and Chipiona. More atmosphere, more party, more reasons enough to crack up some more bottles of Manzanilla.”
