Our circumnavigation of Iceland goes further west towards Siglufjörður passing along the capital of the north, Akureyri, the second largest city of the island. Via a lonely road along the edge of the ocean and through narrow tunnels and a virgin fjord – until recently unreachable via land and uninhabited- we arrive in Siglufjörður. A fishing village, the northernmost of Iceland, which was previously the herring capital of the North Atlantic where 10,000 men in the fishing industry worked and lived. The heydays of the herring industry are over although you still can try delicious smoked herring, the infamous kippers.

A lovely surprise is our hotel: Hotel Siglunes is hidden in a nondescript building but is one of the best hotels we discover during this tour. The theme is retro chic with comfortable rooms, newly decorated and with a cozy bar downstairs to taste the local beer. You can toast on the fact that you are sitting barely 40 kilometres from the Arctic Circle.
